Ideas to Consider While Traveling with the Memory Impaired

  • Have photo albums or other items the person likes to look at in the car with them.
  • Just to be safe, make sure the car door cannot be opened from the inside.
  • Bring snacks with you to munch on, things the person likes to eat. Limit drinking to minimize the need to stop to use the bathroom.
  • If the individual likes music, bring tapes, or tune in the radio to the type of music the person likes. Old show tunes, Lawrence Welk, or classical music are best, but consider the individual preference. Sometimes a sing-a-long in the car can work.
  • Make sure the person wears comfortable clothes for the trip and have them use the bathroom before they leave.
  • Make sure that whoever travels with her is someone the person likes to be around. If the travel companion is not well liked, it will make the trip harder on all.
