Summertime

Summertime called me
To revel in delights
My mind wandered back
To sunny days and warm nights
What fun we had
At sports and the beach
Paddle boats and sand castles
Were within our reach
There was swimming and sunbathing
Picnics and boating
When we lost our paddles
We found ourselves floating
In the cool of the evening
To concerts we'd go
With family and friends
We'd share a great show
Chicken and burgers
Were cooked on the grill
The smells were so tempting
We remember them still
Happy and tired
We trundled to bed
Glad for the pillow
To lay our head
One of the many activities that we have enjoyed involves poetry. The poem is a great example of stimulating cognitive abilities in a way that combines nostalgia with a sense of accomplishment.
PERSONAL HISTORIES
We have also involved residents in an intergenerational program with local students of a Charter School. The students interviewed our residents to create histories of their lives.
POETRY READING
We have also had poetry readings. One featured a New England writer, Fred Farrington Washburn. His poems invoked stories and folk wisdom from the 1800's and early 1900's.
BOOK CLUB
Every 6 weeks we read a new book and discuss it.
LIBRARY PROGRAM
Every month we get a selection of books from the local library. Residents can request their favorite authors and subjects. Then, they can relax by one of our two fireplaces to read.
